Hello Fresh ~ Oh Bother...

When I received a promotion code to try Hello Fresh, I thought why not try it.  And so I did.

Hello Fresh is a service that provides fresh produce, herbs, spices, and meat to make select meals that you choose online.  You can choose a plan for three, four, or five meals a week either for two people or for a family of four.

Everything comes packed in a cooler right to your door ready to prepare.  The ice packs and the cooler keep it all fresh.  You just unpack, place what needs to be kept cold in the refrigerator and you are all set.

The promotion I took advantage of was for three meals for two people. The regular price for this is usually $59.94.  I paid $29.94 with this promotion.  I chose Honey Mustard Chicken, Thyme and Honey Pork Chops, and Winner Winner Chicken Orzo Dinner.

I eagerly awaited my Hello Fresh box due to arrive today.  The box arrived early this afternoon.  Little Bear was more excited that I was.  She danced around as I opened the box.

The first thing that I saw were three huge recipe cards:

Thyme and Honey Pork Chops over Couscous with a Peachy Salad

Honey Mustard Chicken with Roasted Potatoes, Zucchini, and Onion

Winner Winner Chicken Orzo Dinner with Cheesy Roasted Zucchini and Tomatoes

Let's peek inside the bags!

Thyme Honey Pork Chops Dinner

Balsamic Vinegar
Vegetable Stock

Honey Mustard Chicken Dinner

Red Onion
Sweet Potatoes
White Wine Vinegar
Whole Grain Mustard

Winner Winner Chicken Orzo Dinner

Italian Seasoning
Panko Breadcrumbs
Roma Tomato
Orzo Pasta
Fresh Mozzarella Parsley
Parmesan Cheese

Looks delicious, doesn't it!

After I peeked in the bags (and took my pictures), I put away the ingredients.  I then removed the ice packs to check out the meat. The instructions said that the meat was underneath the ice.  I was very pleased that everything was still cold.

And then...

I noticed that the vacuum packed meat was not terribly vacuum packed.  In fact, they were sealed very poorly.  Chicken (for lack of a better term) juice was on the bottom of the ice packs and all over the packages of meat.  Oh bother...  I was so disappointed!  I put the packages of meat in the sink, washed my hands, and then made a phone call.

I called Hello Fresh and explained the situation. Thankfully, the vegetables, fruit, herbs, seasonings, and cheese were not contaminated.  Still, I really did not feel comfortable cooking/eating the meat since it was not sealed properly.  They offered to send me three new meals next week.  I said no thank you and requested a refund.  After a few moments, they agreed to the refund and that was that.

I said goodbye to hello fresh.  I'll stick to my grocery store, thank you very much.

  1. Gina,
I am sorry that happened to you.
    Thank you for the information...
I have seen this and have wondered.
I think I will join you in the grocery store!!

    1. Billie Jo, it was probably a fluke but I'm in no hurry to try it again. I am happy with my refund!

  2. Interesting. I always wondered about Hello Fresh. Sorry it didn't turn out though.

    1. Chrissy, the service is probably fine. It just didn't work for me.

  3. Oh, what a shame, Gina! My daughter and husband use this service and they love it. With both of them working and a little one to care for, it makes it easy to have a home-cooked meal every night. Your unsealed packages must have been so disappointing! xx Karen

    1. Karen, I know people that use it too. I won't try it again. When I checked on the UPS tracking, I noticed that it was actually shipped on Saturday to be delivered on Tuesday. I didn't realize that the food would be in transit so long. I know I live out in the country but surely it didn't have to take 4 days to get to me.

  4. I had no idea that Hello Fresh was anywhere else but UK! I tried a promotion box but felt that overall it was expensive, especially as I wouldn't have bought some of the things that they sent. I did like the recipe cards.
What a shame that yours was not a good standard.

    1. Elizabeth, I was disappointed but happy with their customer service. I'm glad that they fixed the problem right away.

  5. Frankly I would rather just go to the grocery store as well. But then I am one of those crazy people who enjoy a trip to the grocery store. Yes, chicken juice is not a good sign Gina...glad you called them.

    1. Arlene, I like grocery shopping too and I am picky about what I buy. I thought it would be fun to try but not so much. xo

  6. That's a bummer that everything else was spot on, it would be interesting to try new meals that I probably wouldn't think of putting together. It is good of the company to have worked with you to make you happy.

    1. Connie, yes, I am glad that they remedied the situation right away. I don't think I'll be using them again though.

  7. Hi Gina~

Darn! Sounds like a great idea, just poor preparation and packaging on their part. I'm pretty fussy about meat, so I don't think I could do, Hello Fresh, or any of those companies who offer meals. I'm glad you got refunded. Yesterday, we took my daughter to lunch at a hibachi grill place. When I went to use the salt, the lid had not been put on properly, and salt came pouring out onto my plate . . . they didn't even offer a refund or another meal. I was so disappointed, I won't be going there again, and I did not leave a tip.

    Have a great Wednesday!

    1. Oh bother, Barb. They should have brought you another plate of food. Ugh. Service is not what it used to be. xo

    2. I agree, I still may call the manager - I was very disappointed, the food was actually wonderful . . . the food that was not covered with salt. Thank goodness for my daughters, they shared their sushi with me.

  8. Thank you for sharing your experience with Hello Fresh, Gina. I have always wondered how well that worked because I didn't know anyone who had actually tried it. I am with you...I'll stick to my grocery store.

    1. Dianna, it works for some people. We live so way out in the country that I think the shipping/delivery took longer. I love my grocery store!
