A Warm Homecoming

Winter came down to our home one night
Quietly pirouetting in
On silvery-toed slippers of snow,
And we, we were children once again.
~Bill Morgan, Jr.

I love this quote but I wouldn't go so far to say, that these last few days, we were children once again.  Unless we were children like the Little Match Girl.

Who remembers the Little Match Girl?

Leftovers ~ Yay or Nay

Food is not a temptation or an invitation to gluttony; it is a way to taste and see that God, our Creator and Provider, is good. ~Rachel Marie Stone

Isn't this a wonderful quote?!

When I was growing up, we only had leftovers when my father was on a business trip.  He did not care for leftovers.  He was a meat and potatoes kind of guy.  He didn't care for casseroles either and so those were saved for while he was away.

My Crockpot Was Singing...

All day long, my crockpot was singing a sweet little tune about black-eyed peas.  The melody filled my senses as aromatic notes rose like steam.

Here is what my crockpot looked like before I added the chicken broth, water, and spices.

Even though I have heard raving reviews about the Instant Pot, I do not plan on ever buying one.  I am loyal to my little crockpot.

A Weigh, A Weigh, A Weigh Down South in Dixie ~ Week Four

You can imagine my surprise when I stepped onto the scale this morning.  I thought for certain that I would have gained weight this past week due to stress and comfort food.  I was wrong.  I didn't gain any weight and I actually lost almost half a pound.

So as of January 1st, I have lost 4 pounds. Though I would have liked to have lost more, I know that weight loss is a marathon and not a sprint.

This week, I am making black-eyed peas with ham again.  This may turn into my go to healthy diet meal(s). It is economical, delicious, and nutritious! When I made this the first week of January and ate it almost every day,  I lost 2.2 pounds.

As the temperatures drop this week, I'm thinking that a bowl of hot black-eyed peas and ham will hit the spot and keep me warm.  I'll make enough to enjoy all week either for lunch or for dinner.

What is your go to dinner that keeps you warm and toasty?

Sundays Are Wonderful For...

Last week was an exceptionally long week.  We are exhausted!

Sundays are wonderful for napping!

Lilah Rose chooses to nap on my lap!

Such a sweet little snuggler!

Did you take a nap today?

What Are Your House Would Love to Haves?

Every house where love abides
And friendship is a guest,
Is surely home,
and home sweet home
For there the heart can rest.
~Henry Van Dyke

Writing about House Would Love to Haves is much more fun than writing about House Must Haves!

What Are Your House Must Haves?

Though care and trouble may be mine,
As down life's path I roam,
I'll heed them not while still I have
A world of love at home.
~J.J. Reynolds,
"A World of Love at Home," in The New Monthly Belle Assemblée, October 1844

For months, I have been looking at houses on various realty websites.  I know where the general area that we want to live is.  I've spoken and exchanged emails with the realtor in New Jersey.  Now for the next step!

The Long Night

Thank you to everyone who prayed and commented in yesterday's post.  The saga indeed continues...

I slept very little last night and when I did sleep, I had bad nightmares.  I had kept in touch with the rescue and Lilah Rose was not doing well there.  I exchanged emails this morning and not much had improved.

I spent all morning praying and crying and asking God for His mercy and grace.

A Sad Goodbye

and the saga continues...

After many thoughts and prayers and discussions, we came to the conclusion that it was best to find Lilah Rose another home.

Today, we said goodbye.  At least for now as I pray that I will see her one day again on the other side.

We have been in touch with a wonderful rescue that was able to take her and they assured me that they will lovingly care for her until they find her the right home. They said it won't be long as she is so sweet, small, healthy, and trained.

Weekly Menu Plan

Mrs. Jakes had sent up stew and apple pie. "Oh, good," said Miss Marcy. "Stew's so comforting on a rainy day."
~Dodie Smith,
I Capture the Castle

I have never read "I Capture the Castle" or even heard of Dodie Smith but I do like this quote I found of hers.

And I love stew ~ it IS so comforting on a cold winter night.

A Weigh, A Weigh, A Weigh Down South in Dixie ~ Week Three

Good news and good news...

Did you think I was going to say good news and bad news?  Not this week!

Let's look back to week 1 and week 2.

Week 1 ~ I lost 2.2 lbs.

Week 2 ~ I lost 1/2 a lb.

And now... drumroll please!

Fine Dining Coming to a Dog Bowl Near You

Say Whaaat?!

I'm sorry, Mister Prairie Dog, not a prairie dog bowl...

Fine Dining for Lilah Rose's dog bowl!

Because we are going to be traveling North in February for a few days, I am looking for an alternative to homemade dog food for Lilah. She will be boarding at a new kennel and I want to find something delicious that she will eat that will be easy on her sensitive tummy.

I Have Tried. I Really Have...

The new season of Victoria has begun on PBS.  And I have tried, I really have to like Albert.  But I cannot.

It is now season 3 and I have given Albert plenty of chances to grow up and act like a man but I think he has fallen short. He acts so much like a spoiled child (in my opinion).

How Victoria's life would have been different had she married Lord Melbourne (as I hoped)! Lord Melbourne was selfless, kind, wise, and handsome. And he truly loved Victoria and she him.

When Crumbs Sink Like the Titanic

My husband asked me to bake my specialty coffee cake for him to take to his Photo Club meeting tomorrow.  And even though I was still feeling exhausted, I agreed because he is a pretty swell guy.

This is the secret recipe cake that my mother swore not to share outside the family until she passed away. That came out wrong. It's not like she visited anyone from the grave to give out the recipe. She had just promised not to share it and asked us not to share it until she was gone.

Evidently, it was a prize recipe that won blue ribbons for her friend. That friend gave the recipe out to a few friends and one of THOSE friends (not my mother) entered it in the fair and won the blue ribbon instead of the original woman. Does that make sense?

Rub-a-Dub Dub, Let's Empty the Tub!

For every minute spent organizing, an hour is earned.
~Benjamin Franklin

This Franklin quote is deep.  It took me more than a few moments to absorb its meaning.

I think I've earned about 10 days worth. And I've still more to do.  If I had to guess, I've finished about 1/3 of the craft room.

I have purposely been very thorough ~ fighting the urge to just chuck it all in a couple of containers and hide them in the closet.

Chomping At the Bit

While cleaning my crafting room, I came across some cards that I made not too long ago.  I love the colors in this card.

I am chomping at the bit to get back to making cards but I am staying the course - keep what brings me joy and donate/sell what I don't.

The Down Low on Down Sizing

Shopping is a woman thing. It's a contact sport like football. Women enjoy the scrimmage, the noisy crowds, the danger of being trampled to death, and the ecstasy of the purchase. ~Erma Bombeck

I have come to the conclusion that it is time for me to retire from the sport of shopping.  It is not due to lack of enthusiasm, being overly cautious, or the love of an American pastime.  I must retire out of necessity.

A Weigh, A Weigh, A Weigh Down South in Dixie ~ Week Two

Good new and bad news again...

Let's start with the good news this week.  I did NOT forget to use up my extra weekly food points.  I didn't use all of them but I did use most of them.

I indulged in a Panera Bread Pumpkin Muffin. Not the Pumpkin Muffy (which is just the muffin top). The real muffin.  Can you guess how many WW food points it was?

Are You a Prepper?

Peter Piper prepped a peck of pickled peppers.  A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper prepped. If Peter Piper prepped a peck of pickled peppers, where is the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper prepped?

Say that ten times fast and you win the universe!

If you are like me, you won't win the universe but do not fear ~ you are still a winner if you are a food prepper!

The Beauty of the Home is Order

As we consider putting our house on the market, we are working on bringing order to our belongings.   I am learning that less is more.

Grocery Shopping = Exercise Points?!

According to my Weight Watchers app, grocery shopping is not worthy enough to earn exercise points.  I disagree!  Grocery shopping is hard work!  I generally like grocery shopping but, hey, I want my exercise points.

Especially if you use the self checkout.

Seriously though... surely wrangling a grocery cart with stubborn wheels counts for something!  And there is a lot of bending and reaching to get items off the shelves. And if you are petite like me, climbing the shelves to get an item that you can not reach is almost as exhausting (and dangerous) as climbing Mt Everest.

Simply Fit For A Princess

Do you remember the movie, A Little Princess (also known as The Little Princess)?  My thoughts turn to the Shirley Temple version before the more recent one (1995). The movie is based on the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

There is a scene in the book/movie where young Sara Crewe wakes up surrounded in splender including an abundant buffet of delicious food.  She had gone to sleep the night before in rags in her bare cold attic room.  Hungry and destitute or so we thought...

The photograph above is my Sara Crewe dream.  Though Sara's was real, mine is not.

Would You, Could You In a Pan?

Does this look appetizing to you? Let's take a poll!

I would and I could... make Lilah Rose's dog food!

Today, I will share with you my homemade dog food recipe.  All the ingredients are agreeable to people and to dogs.  Lilah thinks it tastes great!

Learning to Let Go ~ Why Must I?

Gone, and the light gone with her
and left me in shadow here!
Gone — flitted away,
Taken the stars from the night
and the sun from the day!
Gone, and a cloud in my heart,
and storm in the air!
~Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1870

How does one let go of one's heart when the time comes? How does one survive without one so dear?

A Weigh, A Weigh, A Weigh Down South in Dixie

Good news and bad news...

When asked which you want to hear first, which one do you choose?

I always want to know the bad news first.  Then the good news. Sometimes ending with the good news takes a little bit of the sting out of the bad news.

When You Find Your Style

When you find your style, live in it and believe in it.  It will take you anywhere.
~Ingrid Carozzi

Have you found your style?

I think I have had a variety of styles throughout the years.

When I was growing up, I had the hand-me-down style. My mother was very frugal and I would wear my sister's hand-me-downs 95% of the time.  I remember my mom cutting down and resewing a pair of my dad's tweed pants for me.  I didn't wear them often.

Half a Lunch - Twice as Good

Today, my husband and I went out to lunch.  We went to our favorite Mexican restaurant (one county away).

I ordered a cheese enchilada, a tamale, and refried beans.  After looking on my Weight Watcher app at how many points this meal was... I decided to eat just half.

As soon as my lunch was served,  I portioned everything in half.  It was a little sad to eat just half of it but I brought the rest home with me.  I will offer the leftovers to my husband.

Do All Things With Kindness - Dealing with Rude Comments

My mother used to say that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.  I think a lot of mothers said the same thing.

I received a comment on my last post that threw me for a loop. I don't know if this person meant it to be unkind or just wasn't thinking. Now normally I would just delete it and forget about it. This comment came from someone who posts regularly on my blog. I am writing about it because I am hoping this person (who shall remain nameless) will think twice before saying anything similar to anyone else.

Trying to Make Less Points!

Weight Watcher Food Points!

Today is Day 3 on my Healthier Me Plan.  (I just made that diet title up but I like it!)

I am doing well so far.  I am eating more foods in the zero point category.  I am a little OCD about these things.

With a daily limit of 23 food points, you learn to eat smart.  If you don't use all your food points, you can carry them over to the next day. Plus you are allowed a weekly extra 28 points.  And you can earn more points by exercising.

The last few days, my food total has been 19 to 21 food points.

Breakfast is generally 6 points - 1 piece of cinnamon raisin toast (no butter)(4 points), a hard boiled egg, (0 points) and a cup of coffee with a little milk and sugar (2 points).

You Were Wild Once

Being wild is not necessarily a bad thing.  If you are a free spirit and nonconformist, embrace your wildness and don't let anyone tame you.

A good goal for the new year!

Carpe Diem & Planning for the New Year

Hope and faith flower from the cheerful seeds of the old year to the sprouting garden of the new year's dawn. ~Terri Guillemets

Don't you just love this quote!

❀ Hope and faith ❀
-------------
Cheerful Seeds

Carpe Diem - Seize the Day

Carpe Diem doesn't usually go hand in hand with planning but I've decided that it can.  Carpe Diem - let's live each day to the fullest.  While being organized is a goal, it doesn't have to be a straight jacket.  When unexpected opportunities avail themselves, be adventurous and seize the day!
