What Are Your House Would Love to Haves?

Every house where love abides
And friendship is a guest,
Is surely home,
and home sweet home
For there the heart can rest.
~Henry Van Dyke

Writing about House Would Love to Haves is much more fun than writing about House Must Haves!

My husband and I are on the same page for must haves and would love to haves.  Wouldn't it be wonderful to find a house that has both (everything!).

Here's our list!

*Ranch House/ One Level - Arlene mentioned this as a must in yesterday's post.  Unfortunately, there are very few if any in New Jersey that I am aware of.  Almost all the houses have basements where you will often find the washer and dryer.

*Central A/C on every floor - some homes just have central air conditioning on the first floor and then window units on the second (etc) floor(s). Because the homes are generally older, it isn't the norm to have one central A/C unit do both.  Some homes will have 2 central A/C zones/units.  When we lived in North Jersey, we originally had 1 central A/C zone that cooled the downstairs but not the upstairs.  After we put the addition on, we had 2 central A/C zones to cool each floor.

*Front Porch - We had one at our old NJ home.

*Screen In Back Porch - We had on at our old NJ home.  I love to sit on the porch, front or back!  (so does Lilah Rose!)

*Full Bathroom on First Floor - This is also rare in NJ houses.  There is usually just a half bathroom (toilet & sink) downstairs (sometimes NO bathroom downstairs!).  Then the full bathroom(s) would be on the upper floors.

*Laundry Room on the First Floor or on the Second Floor - not the basement.

*Gas Fireplace

*Gas Range/Stove

*Three to Four Bedrooms - a Master Bedroom, a Guest Room, and an Office (and maybe Craft Room)

*Fenced Backyard - preferably medium size - large size

*Sprinkler System - I'm really dreaming here!!

*Hardwood Floors - not carpet

*Bedroom on First Floor

*French Drains in Basement

*Ceiling Fans in Most Rooms

*Fresh Neutral Paint Tones in Rooms

*Kitchen Island

*Walk-in Attic

*Finished Basement

*Flower Garden

Whew! I'm pooped just typing all that.  Now I know we won't get all the above but it is fun thinking about it.

Did I miss anything?

  1. Hi Gina!

Wow, you are really getting serious! I do have a few things I would look for in a home if I were buying one. First, I would have everything inspected, with a microscope! Right now, my washer and dryer are in the basement, I would have them on the main floor next time. If fact, I wouldn't have a basement. It would have to be on a quiet street, and yes, gas stove and fireplace. I'm not too picky about color, because that can be changed, but it would have to have nice kitchen cupboards, cabinets and counter-tops. I agree with you, I would want hardwood floors. A garage is really important, with a door coming into the house. Good luck in your search!!

I'm so glad you have your sweet Lilah Rose back!!

    Hugs and Love,

    1. I forgot about the kitchen cupboards, counter tops and cabinets. We definitely will have a good inspection before we finalize anything!

  2. Gina, I got my garbage can cabinet online from Sawdust City. I think you can google them. Seems that they were in Wisconsin. I love mine and it holds a tall garbage can.

    1. Thank you for letting me know, Arlene. I will keep this in mind!

  3. I have enjoyed reading all the ideas from the other blog friends. I always liked to set a price and decide on an area and then see what the best house was for the money. There will always be a few things you'll want to change so it's nice to set aside enough money to do a little updating. But I can usually just FEEL a good feeling in a house I like. I wanted LOTS of windows with good light in the homes I've chosen over the years. I'm happy for you! You'll enjoy this next stage in your life. And I'm glad Lilah Rose is with you again. We all need to surround ourselves with what we love. Hugs!

    1. Diane, I agree wholeheartedly! I love lots of windows but then you need to clean them! :-)

  4. What a fun idea for a post -- loved seeing your want-to haves! For me it would be lots of light, good storage, a porch or patio... those are the biggies!

    1. Jeanie, I forgot about storage. Definitely important!

  5. What a good list! Have you ranked your items in order of priority? A garage is definitely a must have.

    1. I should rank them by priority, Robin. A garage would be useful but not in my top 5, I think.

But oh! the blessing it is to have a friend to whom one can speak fearlessly on any subject; with whom one's deepest as well as one's most foolish thoughts come out simply and safely. Oh, the comfort — the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person — having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together; certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away. ~Dinah Maria Craik, A Life for a Life, "Chapter XVI: Her Story," 1859
